Hydrosols, or aromatic waters, are obtained, along with essential oils, through steam distillation. They contain a small amount of essential oil along with water-soluble substances extracted from the plant during distillation; being much less concentrated than essential oils, they are safer to use.
They can be used as
Food flavorings: added to herbal teas or other drinks, to flavor sweet or savory dishes, taken orally diluted in water.
Cosmetics: facial sprays, skin toners, added to shampoos and creams.
Home fragrances: scenting rooms and fabrics.
